Kickstart Monday: Time for a Mid-Year Goal Review - Check Your Panic at the Door

Winter is coming...

It's official. We've reached the end of June, the summer solstice is behind us and the days are getting shorter. I don't mean to alarm you, but "winter is coming" and it is time to get serious.

Anyone who reads the Queen City Buzz blog knows that I've spent the last three weeks practically begging people to do a mid-year goal review. So check your panic at the door and let's get down to business.

  • Are you where you want to be?
  • Are you where you need to be?
  • Do you have the same goals today that you had in January?

When we make a plan six months, twelve months or five years in advance a lot of the details are based on estimates and best guesses. It may seem reasonable given the information available at the time, but in the real world when you're out there trying to reach your benchmarks things can look a lot different.

How do you get back on track? You start with a status check.

Have you been meeting your benchmarks?

If you answer yes to this then you're golden.

You might want to adjust a few small things based on what's worked and what hasn't the past few months, but otherwise good job and carry on.

If your answer is no, then ask yourself what's been holding you back?

Be brutally honest.

Is it circumstances out of your control or are you behind because you've lost sight of the big picture? It happens. It's easy to get caught up in the day to day details of life and forget about why we're doing things.

Which brings me to the next question, do you still want to achieve that goal you made back in January?

If it's June and you're struggling to stay dedicated to that goal you made at the beginning of the year , it's time to reassess.

  • Is that old goal reasonable given the current situation?
  • Would it make more sense to shift your focus?

Take a look at what you've done so far.

  • Have your actions moved your original goal forward?
  • Is it sustainable?

Can you reasonably expect to reach your goal if you maintain this pace? And look it from both perspectives. Will you reach your goal on time if you're lagging behind? And Is the current pace you're working too demanding? Will you burn out before you're done? Will even a minor setback be irrecoverable?

And finally, is there a way to use the work you've already completed to achieve a different goal?

As we close out the month I'm going to ask you to please take a half-hour and review this year's goals. Maybe you're doing great and are on track to have the best year ever, but if you're not where you need to be, spend a few minutes figuring out what's working, what went sideways and how to fix it. You might need to adjust your goal, you might need to change your plan or you might just need to tweak your timeline, but it's not too late to get things done this year.
